While in Zambia...
Suemarie LaMaker traveled to Africa four years ago, accomplishing a life time dream of helping the orphans in Africa. She went as a student study abroad with BYU, receiving 6 hrs of art credit for teaching art to the orphans at the Bwafano Community School for orphans in the Encampment area. While there she was placed by Mothers with OUt Borders-Kathy Headley's non profit assisting vulnerable women and children in Zambia. Being a licensed massage theapist, she taught infant massage to the nurses and mothers in the drs training hospital. During that experience, she discovered how important the infant humanitarian kits were to the newborns being able to go home. Most parents did not have the money to buy clothes to take baby home in. Feeding tubes were limited so only 8 of the 60 prematures babies were being helped to stay alive-the most ill 8 babies. Disinfectant was not available for nurses to clean their hands. Babies were wrapped in blankets, urinating and deficating in the blanket. Medications were limited. The needs were tremendous.
At the orphans school, the supplies were limited. The children were thrilled to be leaning art. All three of the teachers remained with Suemarie any day she taught art, so they could learn the technique Suemarie used. The children's art was brought home and sold and the money sent to the Bwafano School for art supplies.
The African Humanitarian art show is focused on attracting attention to the projects the non profit "Remember Me Zambia" is sponsoring to give Africa a hands up. It is a "traveling art show" and schools are encouraged to take the show on loan as a way of educating children and giving them a humanitarian experience on their level. The project is organized so each grade level can participate sharing supplies with students in Zambia, Africa. Each child that wants to can make a drawing or painting to send to Africa in their zip lock bag of supplies. It's suggested to have an art show day or evening and invite families to attend asking for a donation at the door that will be used to promote and keep the art show moving from one school to another.Go to Administration and get the details on all the projects; as well as how to get an art show loan.
